A great early morning ride with the sun breaking through the crisp autumnal air. A gang of seven ventured along the river from Godalming into Guildford and up to the steep climb to St Martha’s Church. The steep drop the other side was a welcome relief, but shortlived, as the thighs took another pounding on the slopes of Pewley Down. A tea stop was called at Newlands Corner, where the Lotus Elise crew were already showing off their cars. They were mysteriously joined by 3 armed policemen, but it seems they also had tea and butties on their minds.
The team took the North Downs Way across to Shere. Here the escarpment ridge slopes down produce some very steep clay ravines, and after missing one, we dropped down a hair raising gully as crazy speed. A few white kuckles later, everybody was safely cruising past the posh tea shops of Shere. We followed bridleways back across the beautiful Wotton Estate, finally emerging at Blackheath Common, and picking up the Downs Link to take us back to the River Wey in Godalming.
