In 1991 I was diagnosed with a kidney disease called Focal Segmental Glomerulosclerosis. At that point there was no effect from this on my day-to-day life and I continued the next 20 years as normal and with the occasional check-up.
During this time I was lucky enough to get married, have 3 fabulous children, and still pursue my passion for cycling. In 2010 I cycled 1,000 miles in 10 days from John O Groats to Lands End and raised over £4k for a local children’s hospice.
A few months ago, a routine test indicated that all was not so well with my kidney function and following a biopsy the conclusion was that my condition has deteriorated, and I am currently expected to be in renal failure, on dialysis and a transplant list within 2 years.
So I’ve decided to use this time positively in many ways, one of which is by planning another significant cycling fund raising event – this time to raise much needed funds for South West Thames Kidney Fund.
